Perlite
Perlite is a volcanic glass – but not just any type of volcanic glass. It is formed when obsidian binds with water to form a unique volcanic glass with a high water content. As a result of the reaction with heat, it spits out into small white balls. Often small white balls of perlite are mixed into the potting soil to promote soil aeration and water retention. It keeps water as well as air on the surface of the little balls and in the spaces between them.
Perlite is light, easy to work with, clean and odorless. It has a pH of 6.6 to 7.5.
Perlite is a good choice for plants that need the soil to dry completely between waterings. For example, if you grow cactus or succulents, perlite is a great addition to your soil.
Because it is so porous, perlite allows excess water to drain away quickly.
Its main feature is to improve soil aeration, providing better drainage and oxygen access to the roots of your plants.
Due to its sterility, it is free from diseases, weeds and insects.
